RE: Proposed World Service Corp Bill seeking your co-sponsorship and/or support

Dear Senator Coleman:

Coming from the Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee that oversees the Peace Corps, I was heartened to hear you support using opportunities that will show America at its best. "Even as that worthy agency (Peace Corps) mobilizes a "Crisis Corps" of former Peace Corps volunteers to assist with tsunami relief, I believe an opportunity exists to rededicate ourselves to the mission of the Peace Corps and its expansion to touch more and more lives."

Enclosed is a proposed bill that I hope you will co-sponsor. It will give America the opportunity to show the world its best. You have mentioned that “Different circumstances require different approaches…. Using the right combinations of carrot and stick, America can and will win the war on terror.” The U.S. World Service Corps is an approach that has proven it wins. For the world, the problem has been that we have not led the world in building a bold enough program that defeats the scourges of poverty, ignorance and misunderstanding by planting more carrots than sticks. Planting more carrots feeds the hungry whose hunger too often inflames terrorism.

With the hope that you share this belief, I am requesting you co-sponsor the attached proposed U.S. World Service Corps (WSC) bill/resolution. A WSC is our most cost effective means to stem the growth of terrorism and win today’s long-term terror war.
