The American World Service Corps is a good idea for many
different reasons. Firstly, the AWSC is a pure concept at heart. When
has serving others ever been detrimental too any party involved? It's a
win-win situation. Those that choose to serve in the AWSC would learn
crucial life lessons and create life long bonds with people that they
may have never had the chance to meet. It's a service corps, and true to
its name the AWSC is about serving and helping others.
I truly believe that organizations such as
the Doctors Without Borders and the Peace Corps are the saviors of the
world. Unfortunately, such organizations are understaffed and
undersupplied. If the AWSC was implemented these organizations would
have a steady flow of diverse and energetic volunteers. If such
organizations can do as much as they do now, imagine how much they could
accomplish with hundreds more. Just the sheer number of diligent,
benevolent Americans could surely make a positive, tangible impact on
the whole world and at home. There is power in numbers and the AWSC
would exemplify that.
One the most noticeable results of the AWSC
would be a change in the way the United States is viewed. Undoubtedly
the worlds opinion of the United States has been steadily dropping. The
AWSC would stop this. Instead of bombing homes and harming civilians we
could build homes, hospitals, and schools and nurture children and young
minds eager for education. Thus, instead of hating America many would
love Americans. Finally, America could stand for liberty, human
prosperity, and the right to persue happiness. There could be a day, not
far off, when I would be a proud, proud American for what my country has
done to better the lives of others.
In the past the United States was the
forerunner of modern democracy and freedom, an inspiring example the
world could appreciate. With the AWSC America could be a paradigm the
world could learn from. America's 1,000,000 volunteers would spearhead
massive change as it is, but imagine how much more we could accomplish
with millions of World Service Corps from other countries. Americans
could serve proudly with the billions of other denizens of Earth. New
bonds could be made and barriers could be broken.
